Millions of Americans vowed with their New Year’s resolutions to go slim and trim for 2016, but how long does the promise and commitment last? Is it a juice diet, is it a new gym membership, is it an exhausting physical boot camp?

Does it last one week, one month, or are you going to change your lifestyle permanently for the better? We asked Nina Waldman how to keep fit in 2016, and the Pilates princess came up with 10 items you can do to stay fit and Zen for this New Year.

Be you an athlete, secretary, nightclub employee, celebrity, stay-at-home mom, casino employee, hotel housekeeper, chef or, er, journalist, she has a solution: Self-care. It’s a term most have heard, but an action many probably fail to do. In the words of Nina, “If you don’t take care of yourself, who is going to?”

Nina, founder of Body in Mind Pilates Studio & Fitness Boutique at Palms Place, loves to help people feel and look better. I’m there twice a week in order to stay strong enough to keep pace with the around-the-clock demands of covering our Entertainment Capital of the World for Vegas DeLuxe.

Nina began her education in Pilates after she saw how it helped to rehabilitate her husband after a back injury. For the past 17 years, she has seen her clients benefit mentally and spiritually from simply taking care of themselves. Since she helps clients feel better inside and out each day, I asked her to give us her 10 tips:

Wake up on a positive

As soon as you wake up, mentally go through a list of five things that you are grateful for. “The more we become aware of what we are putting in our brains, the easier it will be to shift any negative thoughts to positive,” says Nina.

Drink your body weight in ounces

Drinking water is not only an easy fix for energy, but your skin also will look so much better because of it. What’s the best way to make sure you’re drinking enough a day? “Carry it with you,” recommends Nina.

Move

“It doesn’t matter what you do — just move,” says Nina, adding, “Walking does not cost you money.”

Eat “real food.”

“Go with what grows,” instructs Nina. “Eat real food every three to four hours to speed up your metabolism. It took me a few years to learn how to eat properly. I use Food For You, Vegas! to help me keep meals balanced — carbohydrates, proteins, fruits and vegetables.”

Stretch

Many people walk around tense because their muscles are tight. Stretching can help fix that. Although it’s movement, Nina gives it “its own feel-good listing.” Whether you have an aggressive workout routine or stick to cardio, stretching is important.

Pamper yourself

“Make massages a necessity,” suggests Nina. Again, “If you don’t take care of yourself, who will?”

Be your own best friend

Love yourself. “Some of the things people criticize themselves about, they would never do or say to their best friend.” By being your own best friend, you’ll be more likely to take care of yourself,” explains Nina.

Reward yourself for your efforts

The best part: The reward can be whatever you want. If you’ve earned it by doing the work, then you deserve it. Nina suggests creating daily, weekly or monthly goals that allow you to reward yourself after accomplishing them.

Clean house

Are you spending time with people who lift you up, or people who hurt you or don’t make you feel good? “Time is precious,” she says. “Pay attention to whom you spend time with and keep in your life.”

Don’t be “too busy.”

Simply stated. Don’t be “too busy” for the things that will only benefit your life.
